Yusuke Urameshi
Things were'n't looking up for 14 year old Yusuke Urameshi until he saved a young boy from a speeding car. The only problem now; he's dead. When approached by Botan, a messenger of the Spirit World, Yusuke must decide whether he would rather remain a ghost, or risk a dangerous trial to be ressurected. At first he turned down the offer of hatching a Spirit Beast, but when he attended his wake and saw the faces of his friends and family, Yusuke accepted. However, when his best friend Keiko is caught in a house fire while watching Yusuke's sleeping body, he has to make the greatest decision of his life. Saving Keiko meant giving up his only chance for ressurection; his spirit beast. He selflessly through the egg into the fire, saving Keiko's life. In return, Koenma offers to return Yusuke back to life with one condition; he must work as a detective for the Spirit World.
Hiei
Hiei has a mysterious past but is fairly well known in the Spirit as a ruthless criminal. Along with Kurama and Gouki, the three demons steal the Artifacts of Darkness. Hiei plans to use the Shadow Sword to create an army of demons and take over the human world. However, Yusuke steps in to stop the fire demon's plans. After his case is reviewed, along with Kurama's, the two demons must repent by assisting the Spirit Detective in his missions.
Koenma
Koenma is the prince of the Spirit World who oversees the gate of judgment. Although he appears to be a child, he is actually 700 years old. His job is to take care of paperwork concerning the three realms; The Human Realm, Demon Realm and Spirit Realm. He also is responsible for dealing with Yusuke's case and assigns him his missions.

Kazuma Kuwabara
Considered to be the second toughest kid at Sarayashiki Jr. High, Kuwabara is Yusuke's greatest rival in the human world. Kuwabara and his gang are know for being good fighters, however, they follow a stict honor code that they would not break at any cost.
Kurama (Suuichi Minamino)
Suichi is seemingly normal, however, his real name is Kurama. Known by many in the Spirit World, Kurama is a dangerous demon who is feared by many. He is known for using a weapon suitable to forest spirits, the Rose Whip. His true demon form, Yoko Kurama, is a powerful fox demon. Kurama has lived for hundreds of years and became bored with the life he lived. He looked to thievery but was caught off guard one day and nearly died. He sought out a women who would give birth to a child and became that child. This would allow him to regain his strenght over 10 years. However his mother became sick and he felt obligated to take care of her.
Botan
Botan, guide to the River Styx, is the cheery messenger of the spirit world. She is responsible for taking care of departed souls and helping them reach their final destination. Botan is the first supernatural being that Yusuke encounters and finds it unsettling that the grim reaper be so optimistic.
